European soccer's governing body has ditched the old approach and implemented what is now known as the "Swiss" system which will see a longer league phase stretch into 2025. The UCL will keep its regular knockout phase format from the Round of 16 but the League Phase will take some getting used to with this set to be the first draw of its kind.
Although there are major changes coming, some things stay the same with Real Madrid once again the team to beat as they enter this new-look era as defending champions and record 15-time winners. Each competing club will be drawn against eight other sides -- two from each of the four draw pots -- with four home fixtures and four away games. Draw etiquette now dictates that clubs can and will be drawn from the same pot against each other so do not be alarmed when that inevitably pairs some big names together for the first time
All of this feeds into a league table with the top 24 sides advancing to the knockout phase with the top eight in the league Phase guaranteed a Round of 16 berth while the others engage in the Knockout Round Playoffs. All of this should create a clear idea of how each club's potential pathway towards the Allianz Arena final in Munich come May 31. We will bring you all of the very latest developments from the Principality as it happens as well as the best reactions once the draw has been completed.
The group stage as we knew it is now gone. Instead, each team that reaches the new league phase will face eight different opponents. Four of these games will be played at home and the other four will take place away and the phase lasts for longer than the previous group stage with the eighth and final round of games slated for late January despite the regular late December break. The teams are split into four pots and each team will play against two teams from each of those pots. One home game and one away game against a team from each of those pots will make up the fixture list. The top eight teams in the table will qualify directly for the round of 16 with the teams ranked from ninth to 24th will go into the knockout round. Those finishing 25th and below will be eliminated from Europe and will not drop into the UEFA Europa League. The eight knockout round winners will then face the top eight teams in the round of 16 before the Champions League returns to its recognizable knockout format from the quarterfinals onwards.
